Free around it: a month that needs its own list

Warsaw's free October on Glentio runs to forty dated listings, most from the district culture houses, the churches and Hala Koszyki, the cast-iron market hall that turns ten this month. The hall's birthday festival, Koszyki X Fest, has Bovska and Kosma Król on Friday October 23 at 19:00 and the hall's own orchestra closing it on Saturday October 24; the same hall hosts a Cypher Crew freestyle night on October 21, the Glam Vintage fair on October 17 and 18, and the tenth season of Midnight Concerts opening on October 20 with pianist Zofia Łałak playing the other Wieniawski.

The churches: Mietek Szcześniak in the Praga cathedral on October 17 at 19:00; Palestrina against Penderecki in the Field Cathedral on October 18 at 17:00; sacred music at St Catherine's, the city's oldest parish church, on October 11 at 13:30; and the Da Pacem festival's Abdullah Miniawy Trio in Polish Radio's Studio S3 on October 23 and its anniversary concert at POLIN on October 24. Jazz: RGG with Robert Więckiewicz in the Camaldolese undercroft at Bielany on October 15 at 19:00, and the Cały ten JAZZ! series at Prom Kultury on October 6. Odd and good: a ride round Wola's factory trail in a restored 1960s bus on October 10 at 10:00, the harvest day in the Jazdów allotment colony the same afternoon, Polish silent cinema with a live score at Dom Kultury Świt on October 11 and 18, and a silent-horror night with a DJ in Białołęka on Halloween. Book the galar for the Saturday afternoon between the bus and the allotments.

For Europeans

Warsaw is a short flight from everywhere and the cheapest weekend on this list. Book one Chopin concert and the Ghetto walk; the Highline and the galar take bookings the same day. Prague and Berlin run the same format on the same train lines.

For visitors from the US

Dates on posters are day first: 24/10 is October 24. Prices above are in euros; the Chopin concert costs about a cinema ticket at home, the Ghetto walk about a dinner. Nothing here needs booking more than a few days out.

For visitors from East Asia

Mid-October is after Golden Week and before the Christmas markets. Poland applies a minimum purchase per receipt for a VAT refund; ask for the tax-free form at the till. The partner tours run in English; the Chopin concerts need no language; the free listings are mostly in Polish.
