Paris in October for first-timers: what to book, and what's free around it
The bookings a first Paris trip needs, ranked by what visitors rate, from the Orsay to the Catacombs to a church concert, and the free week between them.
- Für Gäste aus den USA

- Für Europäer
A first Paris trip is mostly a question of what to book before you land, because the things worth doing are the things with queues. The list below is drawn from our partner's Paris catalogue, 443 experiences as read on October 1, ranked by how many people have booked and how they rated it, and cut to what a first visit in October actually needs. Prices are "from" prices in euros. The free week around them comes from the Ville de Paris agenda and is on Glentio's Paris page today.

The four tickets that sell out
- Eiffel Tower summit or second-floor access, from €52. Rated 4.4 by 17,500 visitors. The one ticket that goes weeks ahead; the summit option is the one to take if the forecast is clear.
- Musée d'Orsay entry, from €13. Rated 4.7 by 28,200. The best-loved museum ticket in the catalogue and, for most first-timers, the better morning than the Louvre: one building, one century, done in three hours.
- Catacombs entry with audio guide, from €38. Rated 4.7 by 12,300. An hour underground; timed entry is the only way in without a two-hour wait.
- Louvre reserved entry with an overview tour, from €79. Rated 4.1 by 11,300, the lowest rating on this page, and the honest reason is the crowd rather than the tour. Book it if you must see the Mona Lisa; take the Orsay if you must see Paris.
The river, twice
- Seine cruise from the Eiffel Tower, from €18. The most-booked experience in Paris, 91,000 reviews at 4.4. Take the last departure before dark on your first evening; it is the fastest way to learn where everything is.
- Illuminations cruise with commentary, from €18, an hour after dark, 4.3 from 12,400. The same river with the lights on; one of the two is enough.
- Lunch cruise with a three-course menu, from €79, 4.7 from 5,400, if the trip has one long lunch in it.
An evening with music in it
- Classical concert at Saint-Julien-le-Pauvre, from €42. Rated 4.8 by 1,000. A small medieval church opposite Notre-Dame; the programme changes nightly and the room is the point.
- Palais Garnier self-guided tour, from €25, ninety minutes, 4.6 from 19,500. The opera house without the opera, in daylight.
- Dinner and show at the Moulin Rouge, from €255, 4.8 from 3,900. Expensive, rated as highly as anything here, and the one booking on this page that needs a decision weeks out.
Food, taught or tasted
- Cheese and wine tasting in Montmartre with a cheesemonger, from €69. Rated 5.0 by 780, the best-rated food experience in the Paris catalogue.
- French macaron class with a chef, from €100, 4.9 from 710.
- Old town and Latin Quarter guided walk, from €39, 4.9 from 640, for the afternoon between the Orsay and the concert.
Booking happens on the partner's site; Glentio earns a small commission at no extra cost to you.
Free around it: the week of October 8 to 11
The bookings above fill three or four half-days. The city's own programme fills the rest, and every item below is on the Paris page today with the time as published by the Ville de Paris.
Thursday October 8, two free concerts an hour apart: barbershop standards at the conservatoire on rue de Madrid at 18:30, and a Shostakovich evening at the Conservatoire Claude Debussy at 19:30.
Friday October 9: Eure Market, a Normandy tasting pop-up on the forecourt of Gare Saint-Lazare through Sunday, and Murnau's Nosferatu with a live modular-synth score at the music library in Les Halles at 19:00.
Saturday October 10: the 400th-birthday tribute to Louis Couperin at 19:30 in Saint-Gervais, the Couperin family's own church, sung by the pages of the Versailles baroque centre. Pair it with the paid concert at Saint-Julien on another night and you have heard both of the city's small-church rooms.
Sunday October 11: the Musée des Égouts drops its admission for the Fête de la Science, 10:00 to 17:00, 500 metres of working sewer under the quai d'Orsay; at 14:00 a brass band plays the Luxembourg bandstand; from 19:00 Supersonic's Sunday tribute night plays the Fontaines D.C. catalogue near Bastille.
Later: Jazz à la Cité at the Fondation des États-Unis on Friday October 16, New York bassist Jay Leonhart with pianist Tomoko Ohno; Le Banquet des pains on Saturday October 17; the Korean mask dance Cheoyongmu on October 28 and 29; and the Halloween Bal Pop' at the CENTQUATRE on October 31. The Mazarine library's Théophile de Viau exhibition opens October 9 and runs to January.
For visitors from the US
Dates on posters are day first: 10/10 is October 10. The Orsay ticket costs about a cinema seat at home, the Eiffel summit about a concert, the cheese tasting about a dinner out. Book the Eiffel Tower and the Catacombs before you fly and the rest the week before; the cruise needs no booking at all outside July and August.
For visitors from East Asia
Mid-October is after Golden Week and before the Christmas markets, so fares and hotels are at their calmest. France applies a minimum purchase per shop per day for a VAT refund; ask for the tax-free form at the till and validate it at the airport kiosk. The partner tours run in English; the free concerts need no language.
For Europeans
If Paris is a weekend rather than a first trip, skip the four tickets and book the Saint-Julien concert and the cheesemonger. Palma and Lisbon have the same month in the same format.
