Berlin's paid list is short, cheap and unusually well rated, which tells you something about the city: the best bookings are a guide and a boat, not a palace. The bookings below are from our partner's Berlin catalogue, 258 experiences as read on October 1, ranked by how many people booked and how they rated them. Prices are "from" prices in euros. The free weekend around them, October 9 to 11, is from the city's own portal and on Glentio's Berlin page today.

The Reichstag, which needs a booking either way
- Reichstag, dome and government district guided tour, from €16. Rated 4.7 by 21,300, the most-booked thing in Berlin. The dome is free to enter but only with a registered slot, and the slots go; the tour is the way to be sure of one and to have the district explained.
- Rooftop lunch at the Reichstag's Käfer restaurant, from €75, 4.6 from 890. The other way in: lunch on the roof, with the dome after.
- TV Tower ticket, from €20, 45 minutes, 4.4 from 17,300. The other view, from the east; one of the two is enough.
The Spree, in the right boat
- One-hour boat tour with a bilingual live guide, from €18, 4.7 from 7,200. The best-rated of the cruises: a person, not a recording.
- One-hour city tour by boat with audio guide, from €23, 4.3 from 18,000, the most-booked and the lower-rated; the difference is the guide above.
- Boat tour along the River Spree, from €31, 4.4 from 11,900, the longer loop.
The walks, which are the point
- Third Reich and Cold War two-hour guided walk, from €20, rated 4.9 by 9,800. The best-rated experience in the Berlin catalogue with more than a thousand reviews, and the one booking a first visit should not skip.
- Discover Berlin walking tour, from €20, two hours, 4.9 from 6,700, the general version at the same rating.
- Three-hour bike tour, from €55, 4.9 from 1,170. Berlin is flat and wide; three hours on a bike covers what three days on foot would.
An evening
- BRLO Brwhouse tour and craft beer tasting, from €18, 4.5 from 780, in the shipping-container brewery by Gleisdreieck park.
- Quatsch Comedy Club live show, from €39, 4.7 from 1,150, the best-rated show in the catalogue, in German.

Free around it: the weekend of October 9 to 11
The city portal's October is a good weekend. On Friday October 9 the Reinickendorfer Klangstraße turns the Residenzstraße into a string of stages from 15:00 to 21:00, each shop and café hosting a half-hour concert, and the Herbstzauber autumn market opens on Breitscheidplatz between the Gedächtniskirche and the Europa-Center, 17:00 to 22:00 through October 24, with food stalls and live music on Fridays and Saturdays. On Saturday October 10, Europe's largest criminal court, the Kriminalgericht Moabit, opens its doors from 10:00 to 16:00: staged hearings, the holding cells, the bailiffs demonstrating arrests, which is the free counterpart to the paid history walk. On Sunday October 11 the Domäne Dahlem working-farm museum turns fifty with choirs, big bands and tractor rides from 11:00 to 17:00. Book the Reichstag for the Friday morning and the Cold War walk for the Saturday afternoon, and the weekend is done.
For Europeans
Berlin is a train or a short flight from everywhere and October is its best month. Book the Cold War walk and the live-guide boat; the Reichstag can be booked the week of. Vienna and Prague run the same format on the same train lines.
For visitors from the US
Dates on posters are day first: 10/10 is October 10. Prices above are in euros; the Cold War walk costs about a cinema ticket at home, the Reichstag lunch about a nice dinner. Book the Reichstag before you fly, since the slots are the constraint; everything else the week before.
For visitors from East Asia
Mid-October is after Golden Week and before the Christmas markets, which open in late November. Germany applies a minimum purchase per receipt for a VAT refund; ask for the tax-free form at the till. The walks run in English; the comedy club is in German; the boats have multilingual audio.
