Vienna sells music and palaces, and in October, when the season has started and the gardens are still open, it sells both at once. The bookings below are from our partner's Vienna catalogue, 311 experiences as read on October 1, ranked by how many people booked and how they rated them. Prices are "from" prices in euros. The free city around them is the municipal agenda's October, on Glentio's Vienna page today.

Concerts, in three price bands
- Vivaldi's Four Seasons in the Karlskirche, from €38, 75 minutes. Rated 4.7 by 17,800, the most-booked concert in the city. Period instruments under the baroque dome; book the front half of the church.
- Classical concert in the Musikverein, from €15, two hours, 4.6 from 8,300. The hall the New Year's concert comes from, for the price of a lunch; the cheap seats are the point.
- Classical concert at Eschenbach Palace, from €44, 4.8 from 850. The best-rated concert in the Vienna catalogue, in a small palace room rather than a big hall.
- Light of Creation in the Votivkirche, from €22, thirty minutes, 4.8 from 10,500. Not a concert, a light show inside the neo-Gothic church, and rated as highly as anything here.
Palaces, skip-the-line
- Schönbrunn Palace and gardens skip-the-line tour, from €16, one to two and a half hours, rated 4.8 by 8,000. The cheaper of the two Schönbrunn listings and the better-rated; the other, from €63, two hours, 4.7 from 8,400, is the fully guided version. Either way, October is the last month the gardens are worth the walk.
- Upper Belvedere and permanent collection, from €23, ninety minutes, 4.6 from 17,900. The most-booked ticket in the city, for Klimt's Kiss and the view back over the lower garden.
- Sisi Museum, Hofburg and gardens skip-the-line tour, from €52, two to two and a half hours, 4.8 from 7,900.
- Spanish Riding School guided tour, from €24, 55 minutes, 4.7 from 7,800. The stables and the winter riding hall without the performance ticket.
- Giant Ferris Wheel, skip the cashier line, from €15, 4.5 from 8,600. The Prater at dusk.
A day out, and a glass
- Hallstatt day trip with a Skywalk option, from €65, thirteen hours, 4.6 from 7,000. The long day; October is when the lake is at its best and the village is not yet full of the winter coach crowd.
- Half-day countryside wine tour with a meal, from €115, 4.7 from 650. The vineyards start inside the city limits, and October is the new wine.
- Small-group walking tour of the city highlights, from €35, rated 5.0 by 810, the best-rated tour in the catalogue, or the three-hour guided bike tour, from €49, 4.7 from 2,500.
- Historical pharmacy cellar guided tour, from €32, 4.8 from 620, the odd one out on this page and the one people mention afterwards.

Free around it
The city's own October is quieter than its ticketed one, and the municipal agenda runs to walks and markets. The BOKU Hofmarkt opens the university of natural resources' courtyard in Döbling for a regional producers' market on Tuesday October 6 from 11:00, and on Friday October 9 the Vienna Business Agency fills the Markterei hall with food start-ups for Markt der Zukunft, 14:00 to 22:00. A swing evening with Thomas Gulz at the Hietzing district hall on Thursday October 8 at 19:30 is the free concert of the week, a tram ride from Schönbrunn. Walks: the Brunnenviertel on Friday October 9 from 16:00 and an autumn hike through the Lobau, the city's national park, on Wednesday October 14 from 13:00. The month ends with Wienerlieder at a Buschenschank on Thursday October 29 at 19:00, Viennese song in a wine tavern, which is the free version of the wine tour above, and an All Souls concert by Clarivoce the same evening in Neubau.
For Europeans
Vienna is a short flight or a night train from most of the continent. Book the Karlskirche Vivaldi and one palace; the Musikverein ticket can be bought the week of. The Hallstatt day is for a long weekend only.
For visitors from the US
Dates on posters are day first. Prices above are in euros; the Musikverein seat costs less than a cinema ticket at home, the Vivaldi about a concert, the Hallstatt day about a day's car hire. Nothing here needs a car, and the national day on October 26 is a Monday to spend in a museum.
For visitors from East Asia
Mid-October is after Golden Week and before the Christmas markets, which open in mid-November and change the city's prices. Austria applies a minimum purchase per receipt for a VAT refund; ask for the tax-free form at the till. The concerts need no language; the palace audio guides are in Japanese, Korean and Chinese.
