Ljubljana in October: Bled in the right version, Postojna and Predjama, the castle funicular, and a zipline

Which Lake Bled day to book from Ljubljana, the Postojna cave and Predjama castle, the castle funicular, a Slovenian food walk and a zipline park, by rating.

Ljubljana is a base, and its paid list says so: the three most-booked experiences all leave town. October is the month to use it, with the Julian Alps in colour and the lake crowd gone. The bookings below are from our partner's Ljubljana catalogue, 90 experiences as read on October 1, ranked by how many people booked and how they rated them. Prices are "from" prices in euros. Ljubljana's own free October listings on Glentio are thin this month, so this is a bookings story; the city page is here.

How to fit it in three days

Day one: the castle by funicular in the morning, the food walk in the evening. Day two: Bohinj, Savica and Bled, in the eight-hour version. Day three: Postojna and Predjama, or the Soča day if the pass is open and the forecast is clear. The Soča day is the best thing on this page and the one most likely to be cancelled by weather; book it first and the cave as the fallback.

For Europeans

Ljubljana is a short flight or a train from Vienna, Zagreb and Trieste. Book the Soča day and the Bohinj-Bled day; the castle and the food walk take bookings the day before. Zagreb is two hours away and runs the same format for Plitvice.

For visitors from the US

Dates on posters are day first: 10/10 is October 10. Prices above are in euros; the Bled day costs about a nice dinner at home, the cave day about a theme-park ticket. Nothing here needs a car; every day trip collects you in the centre.

For visitors from East Asia

Mid-October is after Golden Week and after the Alpine summer, so fares and hotels are at their calmest. Slovenia applies a minimum purchase per receipt for a VAT refund; ask for the tax-free form at the till. The partner tours run in English; Postojna's audio guide is in Japanese, Korean and Chinese.
