Food and markets

October's food events, from Valencia's paella street to a Paris bread banquet

Nine food days this month across Glentio's cities, each from an official agenda: paellas in Patraix, future food in Vienna, bakers in Paris, brunch in Chicago.

October is harvest month in the northern hemisphere, and the city agendas show it: street paella, allotment harvest parties, a department of Normandy setting up a tasting room in a Paris railway station. None of the days below is a restaurant list. Each is a dated food event published by a city, a park district or a cultural institution, listed on Glentio with the source named, and free to walk into unless the entry says otherwise. The paid pieces at the end are the partner tastings and classes with the most reviews in the cities concerned.

This week

Valencia, Friday October 9, from 12:00. The Fiestas de Patraix turn a street in the neighbourhood into a row of paellas cooked over wood for an encounter and tasting on Carrer Juan Bautista Coratjan. October 9 is the Valencian regional holiday, and this is the neighbourhood version of the dish, cooked by people who argue about it. See what's on in Valencia for the rest of the fiestas.

Vienna, Tuesday October 6 from 11:00, and Friday October 9, 14:00 to 22:00. Two markets at opposite ends of the idea. The BOKU Hofmarkt opens the university of natural resources' courtyard in Döbling for a regional producers' market with live music through the afternoon. On Friday the Vienna Business Agency fills the Markterei hall on Severingasse with food start-ups for Markt der Zukunft: samples of decaf experiments, cold-brew sencha, seaweed products and rescued produce, tasting and talking until ten. More on the Vienna page.

Paris, Friday October 9 to Sunday October 11. The Normandy department of the Eure builds a 300 m² pop-up on the forecourt of Gare Saint-Lazare, part supermarket, part tasting room, part terrace, for Eure Market. Producers hand out samples, 10:00 to 20:00 each day, in the Cour de Rome.

Berlin, from Friday October 9 to Saturday October 24, 17:00 to 22:00. Herbstzauber is the autumn market on Breitscheidplatz between the Gedächtniskirche and the Europa-Center: food stalls, craft stands and a stage, with live music and Schlager sets on Fridays and Saturdays.

Warsaw, Saturday October 10, 12:00 to 17:00. PLONY is a harvest day in the Jazdów allotment colony, the cluster of wooden Finnish houses hidden behind the ministries in the centre of the city, with craft stalls, workshops, food and a lot of sitting under trees.

Chicago, Saturday October 10, 10:00 to 14:00. The third Lincoln Brunch Fest closes Lincoln Avenue between Diversey and Wellington in Lakeview for four hours of complimentary brunch bites from local restaurants, with live entertainment. Entry is free; check the listing for how the tastings work on the day.

Tallinn, Sunday October 11, 12:00 to 17:00. A harvest party in the community garden at Kopli 93, in the half-industrial end of North Tallinn: whatever the garden produced this year, cooked and eaten in the yard, with workshops threaded through it.

Later in the month

Paris, Saturday October 17, 14:00 to 18:00. Le Banquet des pains brings bakers, millers and neighbours to Place Marcel Paul in the 14th to make the case that bread deserves more than the two minutes it takes to buy, with a collection of locally grown wheat varieties on show. Listed by the city's own Que Faire à Paris agenda; the Paris page has the rest of the month.

Los Angeles, Wednesday October 28, 19:30. Chef Marcus Samuelsson in conversation at the Hammer Museum's Billy Wilder Theater: what food carries across a move, from a man born in Ethiopia, raised in Sweden and cooking in Harlem. Free, with assigned seats, so follow the listing's booking note.

Chicago, Saturday October 31, 11:00 to 15:00. Oktoberfest at Rainbow Beach is South Shore's Halloween-day version: a trunk-or-treat, food, music and a costume contest on the lakefront, aimed at families rather than a drinking crowd despite the name. The same day in New York, the Seaport Halloween and Kids Food Festival runs on the cobbles by the East River from 11:00.

Worth booking

The partner catalogue's food experiences, ranked by review count on October 1, give a fair picture of what visitors actually book:

Booking happens on the partner's site; Glentio earns a small commission at no extra cost to you.

For visitors from the US

The European dates above are written day first on posters. Markets take cards almost everywhere now, but allotment and garden events in Warsaw and Tallinn are the kind of place where a few euros or złoty in cash still help. Tipping at a stall is not expected.

For Europeans

The two American days are the ones to note if you are crossing the Atlantic this month: Chicago's brunch street on October 10 and the Hammer Museum talk in Los Angeles on October 28. Both cities have the rest of their month on Glentio's Chicago and Los Angeles pages.

For visitors from East Asia

Vienna's Markt der Zukunft and the Paris bread banquet are the two with the most English in the room; the Patraix paellas are Valencian through and through, which is the point. Spain sets no minimum for a VAT refund on shop purchases, but food bought and eaten at a market does not qualify anywhere.
