About this event
Brussels' oldest surviving folk tradition, running since 1213 and inscribed on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list. Guilds, giant puppets and brass bands haul a young beech tree through the city centre, and it must be in the ground before five o'clock to secure another year of good fortune for the city. Expect drums, costumes and a very loud street party.
Why we picked it
A UNESCO-listed street tradition that costs nothing to watch and fills the old centre with giants, bands and beer-hall atmosphere.
