London's paid list is long and most of it is worth skipping; the dozen bookings below are the ones visitors keep rating highly. They are from our partner's London catalogue, 398 experiences as read on October 1, ranked by how many people booked and how they rated them. The catalogue lists its prices in euros, so that is how they appear here; your card will convert. The free programme around them is the Southbank Centre's October, on Glentio's London page today, and it is a good one.

The four with queues
- Tower of London and Crown Jewels, from €43. Rated 4.6 by 32,700. The one ticket to have before you arrive; go at opening and walk straight to the Jewels before the coaches.
- Westminster Abbey, from €36, 4.6 from 14,300, and St Paul's Cathedral, from €31, 4.7 from 11,300. Two churches, two mornings; St Paul's is the better-rated and the dome climb is the reason.
- The London Eye, from €34, 4.6 from 40,300, the most-booked ticket in the city. Book the slot an hour before sunset.
The views, chosen
- The View from The Shard, from €31, 4.5 from 10,200. Higher than the Eye and open later; one of the two is enough.
- The O2 rooftop climb, from €43, 4.8 from 3,500, the best-rated ticket in the London catalogue, and the one nobody plans for.
- River Thames speedboat, from €76, 4.9 from 1,000. The best-rated thing on the water, and the river in October is empty enough to open the throttle.
Walks, two of them after dark
- The original Jack the Ripper walk, from €26, two hours, 4.7 from 8,800. The right walk for the month.
- Royal historic pubs walk, from €37, rated 5.0 by 670, the best-rated tour in the catalogue.
- Harry Potter guided walk, from €23, 4.7 from 22,600, for the day in town, and the Warner Bros. Studio Tour with the branded bus, from €107, seven and a half hours, 4.7 from 20,100, for the day out. The studio sells out weeks ahead in October half-term.
- Secret London by bike, from €53, 4.9 from 610.
A day out, and a market
- Stonehenge and Bath with entry, from €99, 4.8 from 3,200. The best-rated day trip from the city.
- Borough Market food tour with six tastings, from €108, 4.8 from 610, for a weekday lunch; the market is a crush on Saturdays.
- ABBA Voyage express bus with an optional concert ticket, from €64, 4.6 from 1,150, the best-rated concert line in the catalogue and the one evening on this page you cannot do on your own.
Booking happens on the partner's site; Glentio earns a small commission at no extra cost to you.
Free around it: the Southbank
The Southbank Centre's October is free and site-wide. Quentin Blake: The Southbank Parade installs his drawings across the whole complex from October 6 to November 8, marking the 1951 Festival of Britain the place grew out of; you meet them walking between the halls. In the Hayward, the Taiwanese artist Musquiqui Chihying shows for twelve days only, October 6 to 18. From October 16 the Queen Elizabeth Hall hosts Koestler Arts: Rock, Paper, Scissors, the annual exhibition of work made in prisons and secure hospitals, until November 29. On Wednesday October 21 at 18:00, Poetry and Ink builds a collaborative visual poem in the Clore Ballroom, and on Saturday October 24 from 11:00 the National Poetry Library, the largest public collection of modern poetry in the world, puts its hidden things out on tables for Poetry Day. All of it is a ten-minute walk from the Eye.
For visitors from the US
Dates are written day first: 10/10 is October 10. The Tower costs about a Broadway rush ticket, the Ripper walk about a cinema seat, the Studio Tour about a theme-park day. Book the Studio Tour and the Tower before you fly; everything else the week before. The Tube runs to every booking here, and the Heathrow Express or the Elizabeth line get you in.
For visitors from East Asia
Mid-October is after Golden Week and before the Christmas lights, which switch on in mid-November. The UK has no VAT refund scheme for visitors since 2021, so shop prices are final. The partner tours run in English; the Tower and the Abbey have audio guides in Japanese, Korean and Chinese.
For Europeans
London is a train from Paris and Brussels and a short flight from everywhere else. If it is a weekend, book the Tower, the Ripper walk and one view, and spend the Saturday on the Southbank for nothing. Paris for first-timers is the same format at the other end of the Eurostar.
