October is the last comfortable month on the Chicago River, which is where the city's best paid hour is. The bookings below are from our partner's Chicago catalogue, 111 experiences as read on October 1, ranked by how many people booked and how they rated them. Prices are "from" prices in dollars. The free programme around them is the Park District's own October, the fullest dated park calendar Glentio holds, and every item is on Glentio's Chicago page today.

The river, which is the point
- 90-minute guided architecture cruise, from $45. Rated 4.8 by 9,600 visitors, the most-booked and best-rated thing in the city. Every first visit should start here, and October light is the best of the year for it.
- Architecture river cruise, skip-the-ticket-line, from $39, an hour to seventy-five minutes, 4.8 from 4,700. The shorter version for a tight day.
- 45-minute family-friendly architecture cruise, from $28, 4.7 from 2,900, for a day with children in it.
- Chicago by night river and lake cruise, from $50, ninety minutes, 4.7 from 1,200. The skyline with the lights on; book it for a clear evening, since the lake end is the reason.
By November the river cruises are a cold proposition. This month they are not.
Two decks and a flight
- Willis Tower Skydeck and The Ledge, from $47, 4.6 from 5,100. The glass boxes over Wacker Drive; forty-five minutes.
- 360 Chicago observation deck, from $27, 4.5 from 3,800, on the Magnificent Mile, half an hour, and the better lake view of the two. One deck is enough.
- FlyOver flying theatre, from $28, 4.9 from 950, the best-rated show in the Chicago catalogue: a ride over the city and the region on a hanging seat, which is sillier than it sounds and better than it sounds.
A walk, a museum, a pass
- Gangsters and Ghosts guided walking tour, from $31, two hours, 4.7 from 1,900. The best-rated walking tour in the city and the right one for Halloween month.
- Art Institute of Chicago fast-pass ticket, from $40, 4.8 from 990. The one museum ticket worth having before you arrive; the collection is a full day and the lions are free.
- Chicago CityPASS, from $144, 4.7 from 1,000, if the trip includes five of the big attractions. Do the arithmetic against the list above first; for a river-and-one-deck visit it does not pay.
- Hop-on hop-off open-top bus, 11 stops, from $49, 4.4 from 1,500, for a first morning if the weather holds.
Booking happens on the partner's site; Glentio earns a small commission at no extra cost to you.
Free around it: the Park District's October
The bookings above are three half-days. The parks fill the rest, and every date below is on the Chicago page today with the time as the Park District published it.
This week. A community bonfire at Kosciuszko Park on Tuesday October 6 from 17:00, roasting sticks provided. Nahui Ollin Aztec dance at West Lawn on Thursday October 8 at 18:15. On Saturday October 10, the Lincoln Brunch Fest closes Lincoln Avenue in Lakeview from 10:00 for complimentary brunch bites, the Indigenous Peoples' Day celebration runs at Harrison Park in Pilsen from noon, and Bollywood Groove teaches the steps at Mary Bartelme Park at 15:00. Sunday October 11 at 15:00 is the Chicago Latino Dance Festival in Humboldt Park.
Northerly Island, two evenings. The peninsula south of the Loop has the best skyline view in the city: Golden Hour on Wednesday October 14, gardening and a harvest potluck from 17:00, and Chicago Astronomer on Thursday October 15, guided stargazing from 17:00. Book the night cruise for one of these evenings and you have seen the skyline from the water and the ground in a day.
Mid-month. The Hispanic Heritage Celebration at Humboldt Park on Friday October 16 from 17:00, with a bomba set at 20:00. On Saturday October 17, BooPalooza and BarkPalooza in Wicker Park and the thirty-year-old Fall Festival at North Park Village Nature Center, both from 10:00, and Lakota hoop dancing with Starr Chief Eagle at Seward Park at 14:00. The Future Folk Festival with the Old Town School plays Humboldt Park on Thursday October 22 at 18:00.
The last week. Mitote Día de los Muertos in Burnham Park on Saturday October 24 from 10:00, and that evening the twelfth Arts in the Dark parade in Grant Park from 18:00, spectacle puppets from the city's arts institutions. Friday October 30 at 18:00: the Day of the Dead celebration at Vittum Park and Hocus Pocus outdoors at Athletic Field Park. Halloween runs from Oktoberfest at Rainbow Beach at 11:00 to the Upside Down Parade in Washington Park at noon.
For visitors from the US
Everything here is reachable without a car. The architecture cruise plus one deck plus the Art Institute is the standard first visit and costs under $140 all in; the Gangsters walk and the Arts in the Dark parade on October 24 make it a Halloween weekend.
For Europeans
Dates are written month first: 10/24 is October 24. Prices are in dollars before tax except the partner tickets, which are all-in. There is no public holiday on October 12; Indigenous Peoples' Day is marked at Harrison Park on the Saturday. The lakefront in late October is colder than the thermometer says, and the night cruise is the booking to dress for.
For visitors from East Asia
Mid-October sits between Golden Week and Thanksgiving, so flights are at their calmest. Cards and phone payments work everywhere including the L; there is no VAT-style refund in the US. The cruises and the decks need no language; the Aztec dance is in English and Spanish.
