Every Wednesday this museum drops its admission charge for individual visitors, and in summer it stays open into the evening. The galleries trace how the city became itself, from tenement photographs to activism, fashion and the long-running film about New York's rise. It sits at the top of Museum Mile, so Central Park is a two-minute walk when you are done.

Free for everyone on Wednesdays. Does not apply to groups of 10 or more. Summer Wednesday evening opening runs later than the usual 5 pm close.
