The Downtown Boathouse's weeknight slot: kayaks, paddles and buoyancy aids handed out free on the Pier 26 dock from half past five, with volunteers coaching first-timers through the basics. Sessions are short and the light on the Hudson at that hour is superb. No booking — join the line, sign the waiver and go. You need to be able to swim. Note the Governors Island site is closed this season for dock repairs.
