A full weekend day of free paddling off Pier 26, with volunteers rigging boats and pointing first-timers in the right direction. The protected embayment keeps things calm enough for children and nervous beginners, while the view across to Jersey City is pure New York. Note that the boathouse is shut the previous Saturday for its volunteer appreciation day, so this is the weekend slot to plan around.
