Madrid's most traditional August festivities open in the Rastro neighbourhood with a pregon speech and a free concert, kicking off four days of verbenas, chotis dancing, paper streamers and lemonade in the street. It's the most castizo (authentically Madrid) event of the summer calendar, centred on Plaza del General Vara del Rey and spilling into the surrounding Lavapies streets.
