October is harvest month in the Douro, which is the reason to be in Porto now: the valley days run while the vines are still turning and the quintas are still pressing. The bookings below are from our partner's Porto catalogue, 286 experiences as read on October 1, ranked by how many people booked and how they rated them, with the Douro question settled first. Prices are "from" prices in euros. Porto's own free October listings are not yet on Glentio, so this is a bookings story; the city page is here.
The Douro, in three versions
- Douro Valley with a boat tour, wine tasting and lunch, from €55, seven to ten hours. Rated 4.7 by 23,000, the most-booked experience in Porto. The standard day: two quintas, the river, lunch.
- Two wine regions, farm-to-table lunch and a boat, from €90, nine to ten hours, 4.8 from 9,000, the better-rated of the big-group days.
- Douro Valley wine tour with a sommelier and a boat trip, from €139, rated 5.0 by 850, the best-rated day trip in the catalogue. Small group, a sommelier, and the difference in October is being able to ask what is in the lagares.
One of the three, not two. The valley is a long day and the second one looks like the first.
The river in Porto itself
- Six Bridges cruise, from €18, fifty minutes, 4.2 from 16,800. The most-booked thing on the water and the lowest rating on this page; a big boat and a short loop.
- Charming sailboat cruise with port wine, sunset option, from €38, rated 5.0 by 2,500, the best-rated experience in the Porto catalogue with more than a thousand reviews. Twenty euros more than the big boat for a sailboat, a glass of port and the sunset; the reviews are unanimous.
The cellars, and the glass
- Cálem cellar tour, interactive museum and wine tasting, from €22, an hour, 4.5 from 5,200. The most-booked cellar on the Gaia side.
- Taylor's port cellars and tasting, from €25, two to three hours, 4.6 from 4,900, further up the hill and quieter.
- Port wine tour with seven tastings, from €51, 4.9 from 510, the best-rated tasting, across several houses with someone who knows the difference between a tawny and a colheita.
- Live fado show with a glass of port, from €20, an hour, 4.8 from 7,000, the best-rated show in the city and the evening.
The city, up and on a bike
- Torre dos Clérigos entrance, from €10, thirty minutes, 4.6 from 7,400. The cheapest ticket on this page and the view.
- Livraria Lello entry and foundation combo, from €30, 4.0 from 8,400. The lowest rating here; the bookshop is beautiful and the crowd inside it is not. Go at opening or not at all.
- Three-hour highlights e-bike tour, from €49, 4.9 from 570, the hills done for you.
- Pastel de nata cooking class with grandma's recipe, from €30, rated 5.0 by 1,900, the best-rated class in the catalogue and the cheapest hour that sends you home with a skill.
Booking happens on the partner's site; Glentio earns a small commission at no extra cost to you.
How to fit it in two days
Day one: the Clérigos tower at opening, the pastel de nata class before lunch, Taylor's in the afternoon, the sailboat at sunset, fado after. Day two: the Douro, in whichever version the budget allows, and an early night. The Six Bridges cruise is for the hour you have nothing else; the Lello is for the morning you wake at seven.
For Europeans
Porto is a short flight from most of the continent and October is its best month. Book the sommelier Douro day and the sailboat; the cellars and the tower take bookings the day before. Lisbon is three hours south by train.
For visitors from the US
Dates on posters are day first: 10/10 is October 10. Prices above are in euros; the standard Douro day costs about a nice dinner at home, the sailboat about a cinema ticket. Book the Douro before you fly; nothing else here needs more than a day.
For visitors from East Asia
Mid-October is after Golden Week and after the Portuguese summer, so fares and hotels are at their calmest. Portugal applies a minimum purchase per receipt for a VAT refund; ask for the tax-free form at the till. The partner tours run in English; the cellars have audio in Japanese, Korean and Chinese; the fado needs no language.
