The Downtown Boathouse hands out sit-on-top kayaks for free public paddling in the sheltered Hudson River embayment just north of Pier 26. No experience is needed, but you must be able to swim; volunteers give basic instruction, fit your life vest and help you on and off the floating dock. Children are welcome with a parent or guardian. Free lockers, changing areas and an outdoor shower on site.

Organiser's own page is headed "Free Kayaking" and states "Our free kayaking program provides an opportunity for New Yorkers and visitors to get out on the water". Season stated as "May 23 — October 4, 2026", Saturdays and Sundays 10:00am–4:30pm.
