Bizet's Carmen, filmed at the Wiener Staatsoper, goes up on the giant screen in front of City Hall. For one night the square works as an open-air opera house: thousands of free seats, a ring of food stalls trading until midnight, and the floodlit neo-Gothic Rathaus standing in for a proscenium. The sound rig is genuinely good, so arrive early for a seat near the middle.
