Riga's Dzintars choir shares an evening with singer-songwriter Andrejs Reinis Zitmanis in the wooden courtyard of Kalnciema kvartals, the restored timber quarter on the left bank that doubles as the city's best-loved market yard. Choral singing is close to a national sport in Latvia, and hearing it outdoors between 19th-century wooden facades is the local version of the thing.
