One Wednesday a month the 10th arrondissement town hall opens its Salle des Mariages, all gilt and painted ceiling, for a free hour of music at lunchtime. It is a genuine civic ritual rather than a tourist set piece: office workers, retirees and passers-by filing into a wedding room to hear a recital, then going back to the day.
