Byzantium is almost absent from the Scandinavian story of the Middle Ages, despite an empire that lasted from 330 to 1453 and a wealth that outstripped anything a Norseman could picture. This roundtable asks whether there is nonetheless a Scandinavian Byzantium - from the Varangians serving in Constantinople in the eleventh century to present-day arguments about European identity. Researchers from several fields compare notes.
