About this event
Young pauliteiros from Miranda do Douro bring their stick dance, bagpipes and the Mirandese language — Portugal's second official language, spoken by a few thousand people in the far north-east — down to Belém. The dance is percussive, martial and far older than the city square it is performed on. A rare chance in Lisbon to see a living minority tradition performed by the generation carrying it forward.
Why we picked it
Portugal's only co-official minority language and its oldest stick dance, performed free on a central Lisbon square.
