STRATAS arises from the convergence of two distinct artistic practices that share a common approach: fragmenting and reconstructing forms to open up new visual possibilities. In the works of Sandra Birman, images of Gobelin tapestries — steeped in memory and cultural references — are cut up and overlaid with paint, transforming landscapes and ornaments into compositions in which the collective imagination intersects with personal experiences. In Talita Barbosa’s paintings, fragmentation manifests itself through colour, geometry and the reorganisation of forms, in perspectives that challenge the unity of the image. In both practices, deconstruction is also an act of transformation and creation. The title evokes strata and layers that accumulate and interpenetrate, revealing different levels of the same reality. Rather than seeking to reconstruct an original totality, STRATAS proposes recognising, in each fragment, the potential for new configurations. The architecture of the gallery, situated in a basement with black walls, intensifies this experience: the black creates a space of suspension, where light, matter and colour take on a dramatic intensity. The exhibition invites the viewer to abandon the search for a stable unity and to discover — in the relationships between the parts — the strength of the whole.
